Frequently asked questions

Common Questions About Studying at Bright

What is the minimum English level needed to start at Bright?+
There is no minimum level — Bright's Intensive General English programme starts from complete Beginner. All new students sit a placement test on Day 1 to determine the right starting level. Students with some prior English may be placed directly at Elementary, Intermediate 1, or above. Bright accepts new students throughout the year based on their rolling academic calendar.
Do I need a student pass to study at Bright?+
For courses under 3 months, a tourist visa (Social Visit Pass) is typically sufficient. For longer programmes, a student pass is required. Bright is a registered language centre that can process student passes. We advise on this free of charge. Note: language centre student passes go through a different immigration channel than university EMGS student passes.
How long does it take to reach IELTS 6.0 starting from Beginner?+
Starting from Beginner, students typically need 6–10 months to reach Intermediate 1 — the level at which they can begin combining IGE with IELTS preparation. Adding 2–3 months of IELTS prep, most students who start from zero can realistically achieve IELTS 5.5–6.5 within 10–14 months of consistent study at Bright's intensive 28-hour-per-week schedule. Progress varies by individual effort and prior language exposure.
What is the EMGS fee and does it apply to Bright?+
EMGS (Education Malaysia Global Services) processes visa applications specifically for university-level students studying at degree-level institutions. Language centres like Bright use a different student pass application process through the Malaysian Immigration Department directly. There is no EMGS fee for language centre students — the student pass cost is separate. We will explain the exact process and costs when you enquire with us.
Is Bright's certificate internationally recognised?+
Bright issues its own certificates for each level completed (Beginner, Elementary, Intermediate, Advanced). These are recognised by Malaysian universities as evidence of English language study and are accepted alongside IELTS results. The certificates are not internationally standardised (like IELTS or Cambridge) but serve as supporting evidence of English course completion. For internationally standardised English certification, students should also sit for IELTS at Bright.
Can I study at Bright and then apply to a Malaysian university?+
Yes — this is our recommended pathway for Arab students who need to build their English before entering university. Study at Bright (6–12 months), achieve your IELTS target score, then apply to your chosen Malaysian university through us. We handle the full university application and student visa process. The Bright → University pathway is one of the most practical routes to a Malaysian degree for students who aren't yet ready for direct university entry.
