Why choose UTM

Key Advantages for International Students

UTM is Malaysia's original engineering university — established to drive national technology development. For international students who want a research-credible degree in engineering or computing at a fraction of the cost of private universities, UTM is one of the best value options in Southeast Asia.

QS World University Ranked

UTM consistently appears in the QS World University Rankings, making its degrees internationally recognised at a level that few private Malaysian universities can match. Engineering graduates benefit from strong employer recognition globally.

Exceptionally Low Fees for a Ranked University

At MYR 10,062–15,312 per year for most degree programmes, UTM offers some of the lowest international fees of any QS-ranked university in Southeast Asia — a fraction of what Taylor's or APU charge for comparable programmes.

World-Class Engineering & Tech Faculty

UTM's engineering schools are among the most respected in the region — covering civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, petroleum, aeronautical, naval, nuclear, and bioprocess engineering. The depth of specialisation is unmatched by any private university in Malaysia.

Strong Research Culture

As a research university, UTM emphasises postgraduate research, industry collaboration, and innovation. Many master's programmes are research-based, and PhD fees are among the lowest of any ranked Southeast Asian university.

200+ Programmes

From nuclear engineering and geomatics to architecture, management, mathematics, and education — UTM's programme breadth reflects its status as a comprehensive public university, not just a narrowly focused tech school.

Johor Bahru Location — Near Singapore

Located in Skudai, Johor Bahru — just 1km from the Singapore border — UTM students have unique access to Singapore's job market and lifestyle, making it particularly attractive for students interested in working in Singapore after graduation.

Frequently asked questions

Common Questions About Studying at UTM

Is UTM a public or private university and how does that affect my experience? +
UTM is a public research university — fully funded and operated by the Malaysian government. This means higher academic standing and QS ranking compared to private universities, lower fees, and a more research-focused culture. The trade-off is slightly more competitive entry requirements, longer processing times, and a campus in Johor Bahru (not KL). For most engineering students, the value proposition is exceptional.
What is the minimum English requirement for UTM? +
UTM generally requires IELTS 6.0 for undergraduate programmes and IELTS 6.5 for postgraduate — slightly higher than many private universities, reflecting UTM's academic standards. Contact us to confirm the specific requirement for your chosen programme.
How is studying in Johor Bahru different from KL? +
Johor Bahru is Malaysia's second city and borders Singapore directly. The cost of living is significantly lower than KL. Students at UTM can commute to Singapore for shopping and entertainment, and many UTM graduates secure employment in Singapore after graduation. JB is currently undergoing massive development with the JB-Singapore RTS rail link.
Is UTM's degree recognised internationally? +
Yes. UTM is fully accredited by MQA and engineering degrees are recognised by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM). UTM's QS World University Ranking gives its degrees international standing that no private Malaysian university — except Taylor's — can fully match. UTM degrees are recognised in Singapore, the Middle East, UK, and Australia.
Does UTM offer online master's degrees? +
Yes. UTM offers online degrees for MBA (MYR 30,000/yr) and Master of Cyber Security (MYR 30,000/yr). These are ideal for working professionals who want a QS-ranked master's degree from a public university without relocating to Malaysia.
How long does admission take compared to private universities? +
UTM's admission processing typically takes 2–4 weeks after a complete application — slightly longer than private universities (5–10 working days). Apply at least 4–5 months before your target February or September intake to allow enough time for the offer letter and visa processing.
