A practical guide to transport options available in Kuala Lumpur and Malaysian university cities — get anywhere easily and inexpensively.
Kuala Lumpur's Public Transport Network
KL has one of the most developed public transport networks in Southeast Asia. The metro (LRT/MRT/KTM/Monorail) covers most areas of the city and its suburbs.
MRT (Mass Rapid Transit)
The newest and most comfortable line. Connects KL centre with southern suburbs. Average fare RM 1.50–4.00. Air-conditioned, clean and organised.
LRT (Light Rail Transit)
Two main lines (Kelana Jaya and Ampang). Covers many residential and commercial areas. Same tickets as MRT, interchangeable.
KTM Commuter
Connects KL with surrounding cities (Shah Alam, Klang, Seremban). Fare RM 2–8. Slightly slower but covers longer distances.
Monorail
A loop within central KL only. Convenient for moving between Bukit Bintang, KLCC and nearby commercial areas.
Touch'n Go Card — Essential for Every Student
The Touch'n Go card is Malaysia's most popular electronic payment card. Use it for public transport, parking, malls and many shops.

- Top up via the app, ATM or distributed vending machines
- Offers discounts with frequent use on some lines
- The Touch'n Go eWallet app is available on iOS and Android for direct digital payments
Grab — Malaysia's #1 Ride App
Grab is the most widely used app in Southeast Asia and the lifeline for students in Malaysia. Use it for car rides, motorbikes and food delivery.
- GrabCar: Four-wheel car to any destination. Fares start from RM 5 for a short trip.
- GrabBike: Motorbike for fast movement in traffic. From RM 3.
- GrabFood: Food delivery from thousands of restaurants. Available 24 hours.
- GrabMart: Grocery delivery from stores directly to your door.
Free University Shuttle Buses
Most major universities in Malaysia provide free shuttle services connecting student accommodation to the campus and nearby MRT stations.
- Taylor's University — shuttle network connecting campus to LRT Subang Jaya station
- APU — regular buses to and from MRT Bukit Jalil station
- UCSI University — buses to several nearby LRT stations
- Sunway University — buses within the integrated Sunway education city
Travel Between Cities
Inter-city Buses
Wide, fast network connecting all Malaysian cities. From Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) in KL. KL–Johor Bahru ticket RM 25–45.
Domestic Flights
AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines connect major cities at competitive prices. KL–Kota Kinabalu from RM 80–200 one way.
ETS Train
Fast trains connecting KL with Ipoh, Butterworth (Penang) and Johor Bahru. Comfortable and organised at reasonable prices.
Car Rental
Available from age 21. Suitable for group trips. Grab Car Rental or companies like Avis and Hertz are available.
